Following the 2021 assassination of President Moise, armed gangs expanded to control the majority of Port-au-Prince, cutting off ports, fuel and food distribution. The state has effectively ceased to function across large parts of the country. Sexual violence, kidnapping and forced recruitment of children are widespread, and cholera has returned. A multinational security support mission has had limited effect.
